The candidate lineup has been announced for the first of three city council election forums next week at Revelry Kelowna.
Castanet and Revelry are hosting three forums Sept. 16, Sept. 24 and Oct. 1, featuring up to 21 council candidates spread across the three evenings. The candidates will debate local issues and answer questions about their priorities for the city.
Appearing at the Sept. 16 event will be Mohini Singh, Davis Kyle, Tim Down, Indy Dhial, Laura Thurnheer, Bal Grewal and Hamid Khajavi.
They were selected by the ForChange Kelowna committee from those who submitted a response to the group’s questionnaire. ForChange has extended its deadline for applications to appear at the forums to Sept. 18 to facilitate additional entries. For transparency, the group has a list on its site of candidates who have completed the questionnaire and the officially declared candidates who have not.
More than 60 people picked up paperwork to run for council, necessitating the application process. All incumbent council candidates have already submitted questionnaire responses.
The forums will be held at Revelry, 1383 Ellis St. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the live forum beginning at 6:30 p.m. A meet-and-greet with candidates will follow from 8 to 9 p.m. Castanet will also broadcast each forum live for those unable to attend.
Questions have been gathered from Castanet’s readership, newsroom and the ForChange committee. Attendees will also be given the chance to submit questions electronically at the event.
This is an important election. This year, Kelowna is guaranteed to see at least four new city councillors due to incumbents opting to not run, ensuring the largest shakeup in decades at city hall. But with artificial intelligence tools now everywhere, how will you know who has a head on their shoulders and who is leaning on ChatGPT?
The forums will help residents see candidates in action, thinking on their feet, and allow voters to directly interact with them.
